The Road To Pumpkinvine

There were some articles written by Sarah Huff in the Atlanta paper about the Early Irish Settlers. It states that Elias and his brother Jesse came from the area of Ware Shoals South Carolina to Atlanta then known as Marthasville. They later brought their mother and other family members. There is a record that the mother's name was Zilpa but no maiden name and their father Elias Wood senior is on the 1870 United States Federal census showing he was born in South Carolina in 1740 and now living in Fulton, Georgia. It does mention a sister, Mrs. Susan Bailey who lived in a log cabin north of now Atlanta, Georgia Jesse & Elias Wood brothers came with their family from Dublin Ireland in 1800. Jesse Wood settled in Fulton County in 1824 from Marthasville {Atlanta}, Georgia Jesse Wood-had a son, Elias Hinton. Jesse and Elias Wood were in the Old Anderson District, South Carolina in the early 1800's then moved to Marthasville, Georgia in around 1824-1830. Both brothers received land in the lottery in Fulton Co. Elias married Jane Oliver and Jesse born 7-17-1801 married Elizabeth Dobbs. The graves of Jesse and Elizabeth and their son Jefferson were removed from the family burial site on West Peachtree to Oakland Cemetery 28 Nov. 1916 at the request of Mrs. Thomas Wood, daughter-in-law of Jesse and Elizabeth Wood. Jefferson Wood, died 4 Sep 1854, age 18, Elizabeth Wood, died 28 May 1870, age 59 Jesse Wood, d. 16 Mar 1882, age 81. These were some of the early pioneers of Fulton Co. and Marthasville (now Atlanta) Georgia. This Elias Wood and Jane Oliver are the Great- Great Grandparents of Jackie Pearl and Paula Jean Wood, and are the forebears of this family. War of 1812 Service Records has Elias Wood listed as a Drummer in the 2 Regiment Artillery Company South Carolina Volunteers. Note: The Drummer was on of the most dangers position in the War second only to Flag Bearer. Jane Oliver Wood was the daughter of Andrew and Mary (Gibson) Oliver migrated from Ireland to South Carolina in 1810. They died in Troup Co. (LaGrange), Georgia in 1830. They had two daughters Sarah and Jane. Jane married twice - 1st a Mr. Sims and 2nd Elias Wood. Sarah (b 1792 d 1847) Married Samuel G. Walker in 1812. This Oliver family lines go back to County Derry, Northern Ireland around 1770s. Andrew and Mary Oliver are the Great-Great-Great Grandparents of Jackie Pearl and Paula Jean Wood. The 1850 US Federal Census show Elias Wood Age 39 born abt 1811 living in Caseys- DeKalb County Georgia. He’s wife Martha Jane Oliver (Sims)Wood 37 yrs born in North Carolina abt 1813 She first marries a Mr. Sims. Jane's children are; Joseph W Wood 15 yrs son, Lewis J Wood 14 yrs son, Phebe M Wood 12 yrs daughter and John G Wood 11 yrs son, George M Wood 9 yrs son, Silva A Wood 7 yrs daughter, Jesse W Wood 5 yrs son, Mary A Wood 2 yrs daughter Living with this family is Jane Oliver age 78 born abt 1772 in Ireland is Martha Jane Oliver Wood’s mother. This family were farmers as most was then. Elias acquired some wealth dealing in real-estate and mariachis sometimes between 1850 and 1860 he moved his family to Pumpkin Vine, Paulding County Georgia. Alone with him was his son John G. Wood. The 1880 US Federal census have John G. Wood and family living in Pumpkin Vine, Paulding, Georgia. John G Wood is 41 and his wife is Rebecca age 30 yrs. {This Rebecca Wood died or divorced John between 1800-5 Aug 1866 when John G. remarried to Rhoda F. Hudson.} On the same 1880 census John’s occupation is a Farmer and other household members are, J. F. Wood 13 yrs, D. L. Wood 10 yrs, D. F. Wood 6 yrs, Elias Wood 4 yrs son, C. W. Wood 3 yrs.
In May 1861 John G. Wood was 22 and joined the Confederate States Military in Company B, 7th Georgia Infantry to fight in The War For Southern Independence 1861-1865. Georgia, Confederate Pension Applications, 1879-1960 show John G Wood Pvt. Co B 7th GA Inf. CSA born June 2, 1839 Jan 28, 1923 husband of Rhoda and son of Elias & Martha Wood. On the 27th day of June 1862 his middle finger on his left hand was shot off by a Yankee Minnie Ball in the battle of Richmond VA. He recovered and served out the rest of the war. In 1915 he started receiving a pension of $5.00 a year for his service in the CSA Army. That don’t sound like much money today but in 1915 you could buy 10 acres of land. B, 7th GA 1866 5th Aug Age: 27 Marriage to Rhoda Hudson Paulding Georgia 1870 Age: 31 Residence Fulton Co. Georgia 1880 Age: 41 Residence Pumpkin Vine, Paulding, Georgia, 1900 Age: 61 Residence Dallas, Paulding, Georgia 1910 Age: 71 Residence Dallas, Paulding, Georgia 1923 On 28 January at Age: 84 John G. Wood died in Paulding, GA. Death Certificate: 6014-E. On the 1920 US Federal census has John G. Wood living with his son, William G. Wood and wife, Bertil Wood, their children. Also living with them was Roy Smith age 30 born abt 1890 Born in Georgia. He was a hired hand, single white male. End of summary. John G and Rhoda Hudson Wood are the Great Grandparents of Jackie and Paula Wood daughters of Jack and Betty Smith Wood: On the 1910 US Federal census James A. Wood is 27 yrs. James is living in Dallas, Paulding Co., Georgia. Other household members are, Beulah P. Wood 22 yrs wife, Parks A. Wood 4yrs son, Ansel H. Wood 2yrs 11 months son. On the 1920 US Federal census James A. Wood is 36 yrs born in Georgia. James is able to read and write and is renting his home. Other household members are, Beulah P. Wood 32 yrs wife, Parks A. Wood 14 yrs son, Ansel H. Wood 10 yrs son, Ruby M Wood 3 yrs dau, Mary L. Wood dau, and James A. Wood, Jr. 9 months son. In 1930 US Federal Census James A. Wood, son of John G and Rhoda Hudson Wood, is listed as 46 years old born 1884 Georgia. He was a shipping clerk at the Stall Plant in Atlanta. His property was valued at $2,000. His wife is Beulah P. (Park-s) is shown to be 41 years old and born in Georgia. James was 25 and Beulah was 18 years old when they were married in 1905 in Fulton County Georgia. Other household members on the census with James A. and Beulah P. Wood are, Parks Wood 23 rs son, Haywood Wood 20 yrs son, Rubye Wood 19 yrs dau, Mary L. Wood 14 yrs dau, James Wood 12 yrs son and Jack Wood 5 yrs son father of Jackie Pearl and Paula Jean Wood. James A. and Beulah P. Wood are their Grandparents. James A. Wood died 5 Feb 1961 Fulton County, Georgia. (see page one for info on Jack L. Wood)

What does it mater? There are thousands of people in your family history. Most were good some not so much. Some were wealthy most were probably not. Some were famous most were not. One thing is sure they were all important to YOU. If YOU find them back for a hundred generations, remove one person from the chain and YOU would not be here.
